At St Matthews CE Primary, we follow the Ruth Miskin RWI Phonics scheme. The scheme adopts a synthetic phonics approach, teaching children the sounds individual or groups of letters make. Children begin by learning the single letter sounds (Set 1) and then move onto learning different ways to make the same sounds (Set 2 & 3). Phonics teaching begins in Nursery and continues throughout Reception and KS1.
Further information about RWI phonics can be found on the Ruth Miskin parent page.
What is Phonics? A Video for Parents
Phonics Workshop for parents/carers – 13th March 2020
A huge thank you to all of the adults who were able to attend our Phonics workshop on Friday. We hope you found the content and resources useful and informative and enjoyed the activities as much as the children did. Understandably, not all adults were able to make the meeting so we have included some of the documents below. All Y1 children will receive their free pack of set 2 & 3 sound cards, as well as documents from the meeting, to support any home learning. These will be sent home with your child as soon as possible.
Practise your sounds at home!
RWI are currently streaming free online daily Phonics lessons for the children to join in with on YouTube and Facebook. A great way for your child to continue their phonics learning whilst at home. Each lesson is now available throughout the day but will then be replaced the following day. Make sure you check in each day to catch them before they are gone!
Please use the videos below to help practise your sounds at home – listen to the sound and then say it out loud when the sound card is pushed forward.
